Egypt’s Mubarak ‘may stand down’

Egypt’s President Hosni Mubarak is to make an address on national television shortly, amid suggestions that he is preparing to step down.A senior member of Egypt’s governing party, Hossam Badrawi, has said he does not expect Mr Mubarak to be president on Friday. – BBC: 10 February 2011 Last updated at 18:52 GMT

Let us hope for the best. The Egyptians know the good, and know what they want, better than anyone else in the world. But then, it is my personal opinion that, say President Mubarak is the worst person on the planet, but the least he did for Egypt was to provide a safe and secure living environment for the people by following the agreement made by President Sadat with Israel. I personally believe that Egypt has (or had?) been the safest and the most secured place in the middle east for over 30 years, and I also believe that the recognition of Israel was the best decision made in the middle east towards making a peaceful middle east since the second world war. It’s not fair to treat President Mubarak like this, I believe, who spent his life on Egypt and its stability. But still, I believe that the Egyptians have the right to decide for their own country. They have the right to choose whether they want freedom, Islamism, dictatorship, democracy or anything. It is their choice.

I only fear, I truly fear that it may become a modern copy of the Iranian revolution of 1979. They, Khomeini and his followers, took the power using beautiful lies. It was meant to be for the good of the Iranian people. Not even it was worse, it then cost the lives of the people who in fact fought for that revolution, the communists, the republicans, all were killed once the Islamic revolution took power.

Let’s hope for the best…

President Mubarak, do what the people want to do. You cannot stand long in front of the people of a country when they want something. May peace return to Egypt, as it never returned to Iran…
